A few days ago, as I was spending time with the Lord, I suddenly felt his presence come into the room as if Jesus literally opened the door and stepped in. At the same time the lyrics to the worship song playing in the background were, “Everything is illuminating.”
And then I was in the middle of an ocean, the bottom of which I knew could never reached. I looked around for land but there wasn’t any as far as I could see. My point of view changed and I saw myself from overhead, just a tiny speck in the middle of endless water so calm the smallest ripple would’ve been noticeable.
The voice of the Lord came then, soft and gentle but full of firm sincerity. “The ocean is my love for you.”
I could do nothing but float in the water lost in the kind of awe that robs all words. The kind that understands a little but recognizes the inability to fully comprehend what’s happening.
Then the Lord continued. “What if you took a bucket and started scooping out the water for every wrong decision you’ve made in your life. How about 10,000 bucketsful for every sin, each bad choice. What do you think would happen to the ocean? Do you think there would be any change at all?”
The image of an ocean representing God’s love isn’t necessarily new to me but experiencing it in that way certainly was. I was a tiny speck in the middle of love so deep and wide my brain couldn’t put measurements around it. The words of Paul to the Ephesians in chapter 3 about the width, depth, length, and height of God’s love; came to life. Paul’s prayer being that they be fully capable of understanding it but I’m not sure how that’s even possible.
And I love that God’s love can be so big it’s a mystery.
And this is the really amazing part: YOU are in the very center of that same ocean of love! No matter where you are in life, or what you’ve done, you’re surrounded by the limitless waters of God’s love. You didn’t have to put yourself there or pass a series of tests to earn your acceptance. God scooped you up and dropped you in with a wonderful splash and you’ve been saturated ever since.
Nothing will ever change the permanent reality of this so go ahead, turn on your back and float with a smile on your face resting in the overwhelming reality, and mystery, of God’s perfect love for you!
