I don’t go to a lot of conferences but there was one recently in town with the likes of Danny Silk, Heidi Baker, and the Banovs. Kara and I are big fans of Danny Silk and Heidi Baker (we’re not that familiar with the Banovs) so we decided we would try to get out for one night at least.
It ended up being a Saturday night and Heidi Baker was the speaker. She was great and talked a lot about drinking. Water, that is. She actually really amazed me with her ability to go on a rant about the price of Figi bottled water and tie it back into the message God had given her. It was really a powerful message. I Periscoped part of it. By the way, if you’re on periscope look me up. I’ve been having a lot of fun with it despite how many times Kara rolls her eyes at me.
But this isn’t really about Heidi Baker or water or even Periscope. It’s about something the Lord showed me during the worship time. The band started playing a song I didn’t know so instead of bumbling through the words I chose to get quiet with the Lord. As I did he showed me a picture.
I saw a match suspended in the air and it was smoking. The strange thing was that it never caught fire. Click To Tweet Then the Lord began to explain.
God let me know that it wasn’t his desire that we allow the match inside of us to smoke forever. The desired end result is an ignition. God wants that match inside of us to ignite and burn brightly.
Now for clarities sake I’ll tell you that the match represents our hearts. Sometimes the match stays ice cold without even a hint of coming to life. But sometimes we catch just enough of God to cause the match to smoke. There is some heat that we’ve allowed in but we haven’t quite figured out what to do with it. We don’t really know how far we are willing to let it go. Fear and anxiety, for many different reasons, acts as a retardant keeping the flammable properties from igniting. Many of us exist like this – never really becoming hot but not fading back into the cold. Sound familiar? Can anyone say, “Luke warm?”
I’m not saying that the overall attitude of the people gathered at the conference that night was lukewarm but the Lord certainly took the opportunity to show me that it was the attitude of some hearts, and that he wasn’t okay with it.
As a firefighter, I’m familiar with the phenomenon of flashover. That’s what happens when everything in a room ignites at the same time. It’s actually very deadly in the physical and few have lived to explain what it’s like. But when many hearts ignite at once in the spiritual, the LIFE that’s produced is enough to eliminate death and decay from the immediate and surrounding areas.
That’s what God wants for us corporately and it’s what he wants for us individually. There are many things that can keep us from allowing the Lord to ignite our hearts. But I bless you right now as you are reading this. I bless you to walk away from the lies that have kept you from really receiving the perfect love of God. I bless you to be filled right now with the all-consuming love of Jesus as he wraps his arms around you. All rejection and fear must go right now as he breathes life into the depths of who you are. I command your heart to come alive, ignite, and burn brightly. I bless you with hope and the strength to lift your eyes and see the greatest lover in history standing in front of you with open arms.
Let your flame burn!
